Ruriko Murayama
Born in Akita, 1968. Lives in Akita.
Since 1996, Ruriko Murayama has been holding solo exhibitions titled Color Discourse at various venues in Tokyo. In 2001, she attracted attention by showing a large-scale work (H300cm x W500cm) of fabric she had dyed and stitched together herself at the “OP-TRANCE exhibition” in KPO Kirin Plaza Osaka. At her 2002 solo exhibition titled “Collective Charms” at NADiff Gallery, she displayed works that were improvised assemblages of beads, artificial flowers, accessories, dolls, and other items. In 2003, she collaborated with Comme des Garçons and Prada, and swiftly created a stir in the fashion world as well.
Murayama followed this in 2004 with Untitled (a series of 10 bustier works) that fused Collective Charms with fashion, and ROBE D’AMOUR. In 2005, she held a solo exhibition titled “Scenery to the next world” at Yamamoto Gendai. True to its title, the exhibition featured new works in the beautiful but shady “Collective Charms” series that opened up an enchanted world with a high density while pushing the series even farther ahead. In 2006 and 2007, she exhibited new works that fused the concept of “prettiness” with lacquered forms shaped like the human body.
