Eliza Douglas (born in 1984 in New York, lives and works in Berlin and New York) is a multidisciplinary artist, and her works range from painting, sculpture, video to performance. She regularly and closely collaborates with Anne Imhof as a performer and musician.
Douglas takes motif of her paintings from adverts, pieces of fashion, other consumption goods, and/or installation view of an exhibition she found on the internet. Her pictorial vocabulary may seem to refer to Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, or Hyperrealism, but her paintings are more about questioning the status of image, its construction, its circulation and fluidity, producing an ensemble of new yet recognizable images, sensual yet cold, laced with cool humor, and immediately photogenic and consumable.
Her recent exhibitions include “PAROLE (with Lily van der Stokker)” (Air de Paris, Romainville, 2023), “Death and the Devil” (Kunstpalast, Dusseldorf, 2023), “Barbe à Papa” (CAPC, Bordeaux, 2022), “Youth – Anne Imhof (featuring Eliza Douglas)” (Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 2022), “Natures Mortes – ‘Carte Blanche’ to Anne Imhof” (Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2021), “Eliza Douglas” (Jewish Museum, New York, 2018).
What is Onsen Confidential?
Onsen Confidential is a hybrid city-wide gallery share and natural hot spring retreat/conference. The project is meant to bring together like-minded gallerists in a spirit of collaboration and cooperation and to provide a friendly introduction to the unique context of the contemporary art world of Tokyo.
Onsen Confidential was inspired by precedents such as the Milwaukee International, Paramount Ranch, Condo, OKEY DOKEY, Friend of a Friend, the Villa Projects (Villa Warsaw, Villa Reykjavik and Villa Toronto), non-profit initiatives such as NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) and Paris Internationale and gallery organizations such as CADAN (Contemporary Art Dealers Association Nippon) and the IGA (International Galleries Alliance).
