Ryoko Yashima (b. 1993, Hiroshima, Japan) has been based on the remote island of Momoshima, Onomichi, since graduating from Musashino Art University in Tokyo. Yashima explores the theme of pain revealed through subtle elements of human skin by engaging with ( the fading memory of ) her grandmother, who was a victim of the atomic bomb. Since 2019, she has been working on a project “Memento Momo”, in which she raised and slaughtered a pig with her own hand and consumed its meat. Through her relationship with the pig, she examines our social structures, employing various mediums such as video, photography, and sculpture. She also writes about projects- with her first book “Memento Momo” published in Japan in September 2024.
In addition to her artistic practice, Yashima has managed the non-profit gallery ART BASE MOMOSHIMA since 2017.
