Tomohito Wakui

Tomohito Wakui
Born in Niigata, 1990. Artist, musician, and director/curator of WHITEHOUSE.
Wakui advocates a form of “media archaeology” that reinterprets and re-edits existing technologies, incorporating reflections not only from the present but also anticipating future perspectives, thereby proposing alternative value systems. Rather than privileging “novelty” or the notion of progress traditionally emphasized in media studies, he focuses on the continuity of culture and media experiences in his practice.
He also examines the chain of negations in history – biological selection, lost technologies, and contingent denials – and, by reassessing these, explores the possibilities of worlds that could have existed or might exist.
His works use the overflowing and accumulated waste of media and discarded materials as primary resources, combining old and new technologies – such as AI, computer systems, and the repurposing of audio equipment characteristics – to create pieces that reflect his innovative artistic approach.

Major recent exhibitions include “A Personal View of Japanese Contemporary Art: Takahashi Ryutaro Collection” (2024, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo), “Electricity-Sound” (2023, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa), “JUNK’S PORTS” (2023, ANOMALY), “Dark Independents” (2020, Online and at a secret location in Tokyo), “nonno”(2016, 8/ART GALLERY/ TOMIO KOYAMA GALLERY).
